Astrologically, solar and lunar eclipses are extremely significant accelerators of development or turning points. They are moments when the normal flow of time and events can feel disrupted: like it speeds up, intensifies, or realigns. Although throughout history they may have been interpreted as “bad omens,” modern Western astrology approaches them more as opportunities to align oneself more clearly with the growth direction chosen by one’s soul.

Astronomically, eclipses occur when the Sun, Earth, and Moon align near the points where the Moon’s orbit intersects the Sun’s apparent path. These points are known as the lunar nodes. In astrology, the lunar nodes – the North Node and South Node – are associated with developmental direction, karmic themes, and soul growth. When the Sun darkens, the light of our conscious self temporarily dims, as though we are experiencing an interruption in our current identity. This creates an opportunity for a restart, like pressing a reset button on our identity or the direction of our lives.

When the conscious mind and will grow quiet, instinct, intuition, the subconscious, or fate may carry us in a certain direction with us feeling unable to control events or understand why something is happening.

A New Moon is always the beginning of a cycle, so a solar eclipse can bring exceptionally significant new beginnings, like new chapters in life that you could not have anticipated.

It may also be that you only understand the significance of a beginning that occurs around a solar eclipse later, as time passes. Since the Sun also represents visibility, which an eclipse temporarily obscures, it may be that

🌚 something new begins behind the scenes, or develops out of the public eye,

🌚 some information is still missing for you to understand the bigger picture, or

The North Node is associated with the direction of development toward which we are growing – it therefore calls us forward into the future. A solar eclipse on the North Node specifically opens up the aforementioned

⚡ growth that requires courage to step outside our comfort zone.

It is something that requires active effort to develop new skills or capacities. As our identity expands or we step into something new, this can involve growing pains, feeling simultaneously overwhelming and electrifyingly activating and meaningful. You know you are standing at the threshold of something important, and that you are being called to leap into the unknown even though you do not quite understand where or why.

Solar eclipse near the South Node

The South Node, on the other hand, symbolizes what has already been lived, experienced, and learned – the comfort zone, from whose grip it can sometimes be difficult to free oneself. A solar eclipse occurring on the South Node can therefore involve

⚡ the ending of old roles or responsibilities,

⚡ a purification or refinement of identity, 

⚡ the dismantling of structures that have defined you, and

⚡ more broadly, making space for something new in your life.

A new beginning becomes possible by making space for it, by letting go of something from the past, whether that is a role or structure related to work, home, relationships, etc. that is dissolving. Perhaps you graduate, lose your job, retire, your child moves out of the home, or you move away from the place where you previously lived – all experiences that involve letting go of an aspect of your old identity, such as I am a student in this field, I work there, I am my child’s mother, I am a resident of this city or area.

This South Node solar eclipse therefore helps us shed an old skin that must be left behind to make new growth possible. A familiar and safe role falls away. A particular chapter of life comes to an end so that something new can begin.

Letting go of the old can naturally feel liberating as well as exhausting or sad, perhaps nostalgic and reflective. It may feel challenging to surrender, let go, and accept what has been coming to an end. Or perhaps something that was previously a sticking point or a source of prolonged deliberation simply melts away almost unnoticed. Suddenly, maybe something actually feels simpler and lighter, leaving you wondering how on earth this equation ever felt so difficult before.

In summary, a solar eclipse on the North Node challenges identity to expand toward something new, whereas a solar eclipse on the South Node helps us let go of and integrate a past role or direction in life.

Lunar eclipses 

A lunar eclipse occurs at the time of a Full Moon, when the Earth, Sun, and Moon are aligned with the Earth between the Sun and the Moon, its shadow falling across the Moon.

The Moon in us symbolizes

🌕 emotional life and attachment patterns,

🌕 the subconscious, 

🌕 reactions and instinct,

🌕 memories, and the way we remember, as well as

🌕 our psychological comfort zone.

When the Moon is eclipsed, the familiar emotional landscape temporarily grows quiet, and our usual coping mechanisms may no longer work. A lunar eclipse therefore helps us see our inner world from a new perspective: understanding what truly drives our actions, thoughts, and emotions.

A Full Moon is always the culmination, or climax, of the lunar cycle, when the Moon and Sun are farthest apart – the conscious mind and the emotional body facing off. A lunar eclipse disrupts this pattern and helps us see the long-term consequences and effects of previous choices, as well as tensions that need to be resolved.

A lunar eclipse can be seen as reaching into more fundamental and significant inner structures than an ordinary Full Moon: structures whose establishment on a sustainable foundation is absolutely essential for our own development and growth.

During a lunar eclipse, we may experience insights and clarity around

🤍 emotions, needs, and boundaries especially in relationships,

🤍 previously unconscious coping mechanisms, patterns, and dynamics,

🤍 memories rising to the surface,

🤍 an intensified tension between emotions and the conscious mind,

🤍 situations that have been building beneath the surface, involving culmination, revelation, or maturation as something that was previously normal comes to an end.

In order to communicate honestly with others about our feelings and needs, we first of course need to understand them ourselves, and be honest with ourselves about them. And for this, the energy of a lunar eclipse gives quite a powerful boost.

A Full Moon always asks whether we are able to bring together the different ends of a polarity within ourselves, to find our own harmony between the inner masculine and feminine, between ourselves and others. 

In extreme situations, rejecting harmony leads to rejecting the other perspective and entrenching ourselves in our own, but a lunar eclipse helps us loosen our grip on what is familiar and see both perspectives more clearly. The ultimate purpose of a culmination is not to break things apart, but precisely to bring us toward a purer and more sustainable wholeness, which may require changes to take place.

When our grip on our familiar inner world loosens during a lunar eclipse, this can feel destabilizing, yet liberating.

The meaning of a lunar eclipse also differs depending on whether it occurs near the North or South Node: near the North Node, a lunar eclipse tends to open us to new kinds of feelings, needs, and patterns, whereas near the South Node, it helps lighten old psychological burdens.

✨ freeing yourself from past attachment patterns or restrictive emotions,

✨ bringing karmic patterns to an end,

✨ letting go of old ways or habits,

✨ an “emotional or spiritual detox” in general.

This time can bring a tremendous lightening of one’s psychological burden through letting go of old patterns and dynamics. Whereas a solar eclipse on the South Node concerns releasing old roles and identities, a lunar eclipse on the South Node relates to releasing old psychological content such as feelings, needs, reactions, and inner story lines – things that keep you attached to the past, preventing life from moving forward. 

We may be called to encounter our own shadow, or something we have projected out onto other people: to take responsibility for integrating it ourselves so that we can finally break the cycle. Letting go may, of course, bring with it wistfulness and grief, but it ultimately helps lighten the load.

A South Node lunar eclipse helps us see the consequences of past choices more clearly: perhaps realizing that we no longer need what we once needed, no longer feel the way we used to, or no longer want to continue a particular pattern in a particular relationship. Something that once worked no longer feels right, our needs have changed, or a relationship has evolved into something different from what it once was. 

Suddenly, the rational reasons for continuing a particular old pattern no longer have the same inner support, as our own feelings and needs pull us in a different direction. The conscious mind may wonder at the “illogical” nature of our feelings, but something from the subconscious raises its voice and pushes its way into awareness, declaring, this is how I feel now, and refusing to act against its own boundaries simply to appease reason.

In summary, a lunar eclipse on the North Node helps us move toward new emotional and relationship patterns, while a lunar eclipse on the South Node helps us let go of an outdated emotional pattern, psychological burden, or karma from the past.
